About this Opportunity
Come out and help us make a difference in the lives of students. Work with us to educate our next generation of land stewards!
Every year, we lead a variety of school outreach/education programs at GCSNA and in the surrounding community. We rely on volunteers to help with these events.
Possible program opportunities include helping run school field trips, leading interactive educational stations, leading hikes (sometimes public, sometimes visiting school groups), etc. All necessary instruction and supplies will be provided.
Prior experience working with children or with public speaking is useful, but not required. Training is provided. Volunteers may lead small groups of children or other visitors in activities that involve:
- Hiking over unpaved, rocky terrain. With school groups, hikes are usually less than one mile. There are also opportunities to lead longer guided hikes for visitors of all ages on weekends.
- Organizing and playing active predator/prey, food chain construction, and other games on mowed grass.
- Demonstrating and discussing animal adaptations or other topics using our skins and skulls kit or other artifacts, usually on a paved or hard surface but sometimes in an unpaved location.
- Working with multiple groups of students in the course of a 3-4 hour field trip as they rotate through activities. A volunteer will often repeat their presentation 2-3 times for different groups.
Government Canyon SNA appreciates the efforts of anyone who wants to share their time as a volunteer. If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications using this form, or email accessibility@tpwd.texas.gov at least 2 weeks in advance.
